Janette Jagger
Cat and Mousehole
About
Janette Jagger was born in Broken Hill, a mining town in the Australian desert. She went to the Adelaide School of Arts and Crafts (where naive painting was still unknown!) The heat in summer was intense, the skies were a dazzling blue and her hometown was surrounding by vast open spaces with little human habitation. The hot, ochre colours still fill her mind.
In Janette’s early twenties, she travelled to the UK, as young Australians had started to do, and hitch-hiked around Europe. Later, she lived in Spain and Brazil and visited many countries around the world including Uganda, Australia and Romania, collecting a lifetime of inspiration for her paintings. In all her travels, Janette has painted in different countries and all parts of the UK. Brazil is a favourite – it’s so colourful!
Janette is now settled in the South Hams of Devon where nothing could be more different to the desert around Broken Hill; everything is green and lush and characterised by ancient stone fishing villages, thatched cottages, stately homes, wild hedgerows, woodlands full of bluebells, lush fields, narrow lanes and the vast skies of Dartmoor.
One of her greatest delights in Devon is living near the sea and she often paints seaside scenes in summer, with beach-goers building sandcastles, playing cricket, putting up windbreaks, surfing and having fun. The skies are always blue and the sun is shining.
